Bringing it to the surface, making it known, is step one in transforming the obstacle in front of you, whether you take a different path, or realize it's not as daunting as you first thought.
Whether in a yoga class or moving throughout your day, watch for your "I can't"s and instead, name what your barrier is. Empower yourself to move through our around the obstacle. You might surprise yourself with an, "I can!"

Instagram post 2159262690089641268_1182764830 Mountain Brook: this pose may look quite simple, it is anything but. There's a lot of benefit that comes from this posture & a number of reasons you might choose a different pose. 
The most obvious benefit is opening through the chest, reversing the effects of a typical workday. Whether you spend time driving, sitting in front of a computer, or doing food prep, the body is typically reaching forward, & this reverses that posture. Typically one would let their head drop back more in this pose, providing more extension to the cervical spine. I find that lengthening the space around my atlas and C2 helps my chronically tight neck muscles relax, preventing misalignment & migraines, so I've opted to move my larger neck bolster back a bit to stretch this area.

This pose is great for rejuvenation & elevating the mood. Opening the chest & arms decreases cortisol. The Mona Lisa smile I'm sporting sends the signal to my brain that I'm feeling good. In a heightened sympathetic response, I would choose a less open posture, at least until I felt my muscles relax & I had utilized the breath to down-regulate my fight/flight response.

Why the blankets on the belly? The abdomen is one of the more vulnerable spots of our body & allowing it to be open can induce stress, especially in one who has experienced trauma or in a collapsed state. While the shape could draw us out of collapse, finding ways to reinforce the feeling of safety is paramount to up-regulation of the parasympathetic nervous system.

There's much more I could say; the breath alone being worthy of another post. There are many chances with me this fall to dive deeper into restoring mind, body, and health through the art of the "gentle" forms of yoga. Whether you simply want to experience the benefits, or gain a deeper awareness of your being & your practice, join me!

In this immersion, we will look at the varying philosophies of the chakra systems, exploring not only the 7-system chakra system most popular today, but placements and hierarchies of the elements and energies in the body. As you work with a wide range of ways to direct your attention to the subtle energy that lives within you, illuminating that which has been unprocessed, drawing it to the surface, you'll start to learn there is no one right way to approach connection to the energy centers of the body. We will experience the chakras through sound, meditation, and movement, as well as through the Eastern concepts of nyasa and marmani and the Western concepts of nerve plexuses, archetypes, and visceromatics. Most importantly, you will discover how best to engage with the energetic patterns manifest in your body and psyche, moving that energy from the deep layers of your unconscious to the surface, so they can be digested, assimilated, and ultimately dissolved, unblocking the path to inherent intuition.

Sometimes the answer is hard to find, but I've found over the years that somewhere along the way, it presents itself. When it does, it is always fascinating to unwrap the practice, discover the roots, and see what lies beneath, like a pandora's box. 
These inquiries have led to this immersion, Threads of Lineage :: Connecting the Ancient Texts to the Modern Yogini. At first read, the Sutras, the Samhitas, and the Pradipika seem so very esoteric and one wonders what bearing, if any, they have on the yoga we practice today. We will look at the practices within, and explore the shat kriyas, asanas, pranayamas, and meditations, and compare the methods both between texts and in our modern day. In the end we'll remember that many of these texts are compilations and incomplete. To honor what we personally witness in the essence of these practices should be given just as much weight as following the text.
