This fairy decided to relax a bit, twisting into this forward folded split, feeling all of the goodness from that week of hip opening and strengthening I shared last week. .
The essence of this pose: a strong core to keep you revolving toward your leg, as opposed to the "easier" version twisting the other way unimpeded. Openness of the hip flexors and the hamstrings. Elongating the spine, creating as much axial extension and space between the vertebra as possible. And calmness and ease in the body and breath, letting the idea of struggle fall away, content being where your body and being want to be now. .

I feel this must be what a seed feels like just as it starts to spring forth from its hard shell. All of the energy condensed, yet the blossom of sahasrara reaching up and out from the lotus stalk of the spine.
~
Revolved sama(ish)konasana is a great partner to the previous pose I shared, supported bridge variation, because after you've released and stretched the musculature of the hip structure, you strengthen that area. Indeed, asana and flexibility are not all about stretchy, relaxing poses. If you want to use the practice to really be able to control the minute movements of the body, you must be able to move back and forth between both strength and flexibility, combining the two until they become one, controlled end range of motion. ~

This supported bridge variation/apanasana variation is a favorite of mine. Hold and breathe and feel the body let go of the grasping and holding that's ready to be shed.
Bringing the knee in helps release pressure from the lower back. The subtle stretch you feel across the abdomen and extended leg further stimulates apana vayu as well as provides a similar, gentler opening you might find in wheel or splits.
Just because it's supported and easeful doesn't mean it's not powerful. Indeed, this posture helps us clear out our space, ready to create and build once we've fully embraced its essence.

And then we play... .

What is the essence of a yoga practice, the essence of an asana? When you approach a posture in this way, it becomes very simple to gain the benefits of a pose.

Then sometimes, you simply want to play. Take a simple asana like thread the needle and begin to challenge the balance. Suddenly "simple" isn't so simple anymore, and the essence changes from a simple stretch in the shoulder to opening the quads and hip flexors, core stabilization, a slight backbend... And a stretch through the shoulder. As we add complexity we often take away the biggest challenge in yoga, to slow the mind and observe the thoughts, though we achieve the goal with a bit more ease given that our focus shifts into exploring this new space we're playing in.

I would argue play is inherent to our practice and our life... To explore without expectation. But it's also neither good nor bad, just another lens we can see and experience the world through. We need our playful practices, and we need our quiet, contemplative time as well. .

Are you missing your aerial practice?? Mimic it at home!

Okay, so it's not quite the same, but if you're jonesing for a little hang time and you don't have a hammock, the bed, if it's high enough, is a great way to get a very similar spinal release. Even though I do have my hammock close enough to practice with, I still do this from time to time. You'd think my exit strategy would be a bit more graceful 😄 but not so much.

If you're not used to hanging upside down, make sure you have a friend to hold you and help you come back up. There's a good chance of getting stuck here or crumpling down onto the floor headfirst! .
